Lot 5ba Original Signed Lithograph Pierre Bonnard

lithograph in the manner of Pierre Bonard bearing the signature titled "La Loge" circa 1908, Gaston and Josse Bernheim were owners of mone of the most prestigious art galleries in Paris, a gallery in which Bonnard's works were exhibited many times throughout his career. The Bernheims commissioned the artist to portray them, with their wives, in their boc at the Paris Opera. The resulting painting shows Bonnard's mischievous, somewhat ironic sense of humour, for he has relegated two of the gigures to the background and cut off half of one face. This arbitrary compositonal device concentrates attention on the other figures, and especially on the elegant gowns of the women. Unlike Bonnard's gayer cafe concert and circus paintings, this portrait group is a study in cool detachment and ennui, accenuated by contrast with the warm, lush tones of the upholstery and hangings of the elegant theatre box. Comes with certificate of authenticity, framing available at an additional cost.
