Text from the Chagall catalogue raisonne (Vol. 6, page 42):
"It was the editor Aime Maeght who had the idea of asking Chagall to realize a few large scale lithographs. There was nothing very precise in this request, neither as far as the dimensions were concerned, nor from the point of view of the common theme. The artist had all the liberty to choose the subject at will. At first Chagall was a little reticent. But he wanted to please Aime Maeght and so he began to work. Almost at once he became completely absorded in the project and went well beyong the editors request, since he was soon working on fourteen plates. Charles Sorlier specified the maximum dimensions of the presses (116 X 75 cm) and Chagall got on with the fourteen lithographs wihout interruption. He decided to leave "Creation" in black, finding its graphics sufficient. This very fine plate with its effervescent line is in fact a masterpiece.
When they were completed, Aime Maeght presented them in an exhibition. Chagall, very ill, was taken to see them on his walls. These were the last works which the artist edited."
