^Lot 203 Oregon Short Line Globe Lantern OR - c1909 - Railroadiana

The Oregon Short Line Railway was created 1 August 1881 by its parent company, Union Pacific Railway Co. in order to “connect the Union Pacific Ry. with the railroads of the Oregon Railway & Navigation Co” [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads, 1882, p. 861]. In 1889, it consolidated to become The Oregon Short Line And Utah Northern Railway [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads, 1894, p. 848]. Following the bankruptcy of Union Pacific in 1893, the line was reorganized and renamed the Oregon Short Line Railroad in 1897 [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads 1906, p. 597]. The railroad finally merged with Union Pacific Railroad on 30 December 1987 [Ref: Wikipedia]. Lantern stands 10” tall, without bail (handle). “The Adams & Westlake Company-Chicago-” is embossed around the outer rim of the lid’s ventilator top, surrounding a “The “Adams”” embossing. Along the outermost rim of the lid is embossed “Pat’d . Sept.21.1897.May 5.1908.3.Pat’s.Jan.26.1909.”. “O.S.L.” is also embossed on the hinged lid. The lantern comes with a 5 3/8" tall Corning clear cast "O.S.L." globe with serif letters in a rectangular border. The bottom of the globe is intact, and the top of the globe bears a small chip on the rim. The globe cap is rusted, but intact, and secures to the lantern lid with a spring-and-clip mechanism. Lantern also includes a short globe “Adlake” burner with an “APR.27.1909” patent mark. Will still hold oil and burn! Metal, tin finish, some rust along foot and bail, very nice condition for its age. - Jacobitz Collection
