Lot 253 Washoe Indian Basket NV - , - c1930 - Cowboy & Native American
The style of this basket is a “degikup,” completed from a “lazy stitch” pattern. The basket measures 11” x 10” x 6". A black and brown decorative pattern with an arrow motif is woven throughout. There is some wear including fading from light exposure. Also note that the string on the lid has been torn on one side. Native peoples of the Great Basin are known for their adaptability and flexible use of materials from the high desert environment. The Washoe needed light but reliable material that could be found easily, thus willow, sagebrush, and other materials were used to create these baskets. The Washoe and their baskets are not only examples of art, but also practicality [Ref: http://www.onlinenevada.org/washoe_basket_weavers]. - Jacobitz Collection
