Lot 1022 Carbide Miner's Lamp c1900 - Mining Hard goods/Important Mining Publications
Carbide lamps have been in use since 1894 to provide reliable lighting for miners and cave explorers. The lower chamber of this lamp, the generator, holds calcium carbide. The upper well is filled with water, and the adjustable pin on the top controls the amount of water that reaches the carbide, which reacts to produce acetylene gas. The gas is then filtered into the lens chamber and can be lit. This carbide lamp is 10” tall, with bail, and the base is still full of carbide. The lens is 4.75” diameter.
