Lot 1434 Prohibition Broadside - , - 1891 - Saloon
Measures 10.25” x 7.5”, some wear, including crease and tears along the sides and in the middle. The leaflet promotes two sermons; “The Ungodly League of Church and Saloon” and "Touch Not the Unclean Thing.” Both taken from The Voice. Produced in New York, September 1891. A section from one of the passages reads: “a church that will not insist that its members array themselves against that license of drunkard-making and against all political parties that uphold it has lost it s power to cope with sin and has become an ally of hell.” The topic of temperance and alcohol consumption has a long and complex history in the United States. By the time this leaflet was produced, many groups banded together to campaign against businesses that supported the making or selling of alcohol. The list included the American Temperance Society, Prohibition Party, the Woman`s Christian Temperance Union and many others. Religious leaders and other temperance groups wrote and produced leaflets to help gain support in banning alcohol. This leaflet is one of many made, meant to gain support for the cause [Ref: American Temperance Movement, Jack S. Blocker, 1989, pp 13-26].
