Lot 1534 San Mateo Picnic Bottle & Token CA - San Mateo, - c1907 - Saloon
The slug plate reads, “H. McLOUGHLIN THE MAGNOLIA SAN MATEO". The token obverse mimics this, and the reverse reads "2 1/2 C". The Magnolia saloon was opened in San Mateo in 1907, by Hugh McLoughlin. It was reported that the "Old Hugh ran a spick and span, orderly saloon. Fresh sawdust on the floor every day. Well known San Francisco and San Mateo aristocrats would get off the train each evening at the Depot, just a few steps from Mac`s where he would have their favorite drinks on the bar waiting for them." Hugh continued his saloon until Prohibition in 1918 [Ref: Picnics, Coffins, Shoo-Flies, Thomas, 1974]. This is a purple half pint in near mint condition, air vented at the shoulders, with a footed base, double roll collar top. Listed in both Thomas and Wilson. - Feisel Collection
