Civil War Gwyn & Campbell Breechloading Percussion Carbine, Type I, #99 (or 66), .52 cal., 20" round barrel, block-pin front sight, flip-up rear on 3.5" octagonal breech; 4.25" squared receiver has long serpentine trigger guard/operating lever, stamped "Union/Rifle" over an illegible mark at right, 5.5" back-action lockplate has long hammer curved to meet nipple. "Perch belly" buttstock of oil-finished walnut has crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1863-64. Condition is good retaining no original finishes but overall gray gunmetal showing scattered oxidation and light erosion (buttplate pitted), fine edges and markings. Sling ring/bar missing from right side. Stock is sound with scattered light marks, added varnish, lacks inspector's mark. Action is crisp, breechblock hinge secure, bore shows overall moderate erosion, fair rifling. Est.: $1,400-$1,800. (Antique)
