Lot 364 Springfield Model 1861 Single-Shot Percussion Shortened Rifle
Springfield Model 1861 Single-Shot Percussion Shortened Rifle, NVSN, .58 cal., 28" round barrel with standard sights, marked "Y&C" at left breech; 1863-dated Springfield lockplate and hardware are correct Civil War M-1861 rifle pieces, as is the oil-finished 2-band walnut fullstock. Steel tulip-head ramrod. As with many surplus military arms at war's end, this rifle was likely purchased at a government auction by an arms dealer?perhaps "Y&C" in this case?shortened and lightened, then re-sold for civilian sporting use. Condition is good to very good as configured, having been refinished in blue some time ago while retaining good edges and markings. Stock is sound showing 2 vacant screw holes at top of wrist (probably for a tang sight), light marks and two inspectors' cartouches (incl. "ESA") opposite the lock. Action is crisp, bore shows cleaned frosting and good rifling. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
