Very Rare Jenks "Mule Ear" Tape-Primer Percussion Carbine, NVSN, .54 cal., 24.25" round barrel is marked "W. Jenks/U.S.N./RP/P/1847/Cast Steel" at breech; long receiver has 5.75" rear-hinged breech-lever with articulated plunger to seat combustible cartridge in chamber, sighting groove between raised "wings"; 6.5" lockplate marked "Remington's/Herkimer, N.Y." has 2.25" mule-ear hammer, bottom-hinged Maynard tape primer door; brass fittings include trigger guard with rear sling-ring, buttplate, 2 screw-retained bands (upper with integral blade sight). Fullstock of oil-finished walnut. Mfg'd 1847-48, in just 1,000 qty. est. Condition is good, the barrel wears a lightly-oxidized brown patina, darkened case colors (pattern to primer door), age-toned brass, fine edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with "J.M" lightly scratched at right, repaired break between lockplate/top of receiver, 2" sliver out below lock, 3.5" crack at left, else nice grain, color and finish.
