Low Serial Civil War Smith Breechloading Percussion Carbine, #0008, .50 cal., 21.6" round-to-octagonal barrel has 5.5" release bar at top that allows barrel to pivot downward for loading, "L.F.R." at breech; receiver has hinge at bottom-front, push-lever to release barrel, left-side sling bar, integral nipple bolster with cleanout screw, marked "Smith's Patent/June 23, 1857", "Address/Poultney & Trimble/Baltimore U.S.A.", and "Manufactured by/Am'n. M'ch'n. Wks./Springfield, Mass." at left. Oil-finished walnut forend, matching buttstock with oval "J.H." cartouche of Inspector John Hannis at left wrist, "C5" at left butt. Mfg'd ca. 1861-65. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 98% military barrel blue (freckling on angled left flat at rear sight, deep glossy blue on barrel release bar and trigger guard/lower tang), softly mottled case colors, sharp edges and markings. Stocks are sound showing a few minor dings, slight chipping at toe of butt, sharp markings and most original finish. Lacks sling ring. Action is crisp, barrel hinge secure, bore brilliant with sharp rifling. Note low serial #0008. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
