Very Rare Sharps Model 1851 Breechloading "Box Lock" Percussion Carbine, #1371, .44 cal., 21.6" round barrel with blade front sight and unusual folding-leaf rear, marked "Robbins &/Lawrence"; receiver has long back-action lockplate with inside hammer, bottom-hinged tape primer door marked "Edward Maynard/Patentee/1845", serpentine trigger guard/operating lever, marked "C. Sharps/Patent/1848" and "1371" on top tang, which has threaded hole for tang sight (not present); brass fittings include 5.25" patch box, crescent buttplate, single band. 2-pc. halfstock of oil-finished walnut. Mfg'd ca. 1852-55, just 1,857 qty. Condition is good showing smooth bright steel, lightly toned brass, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth but for secure cracks at wrist (esp. left side), a sloppy 2" wood repair and vacant hole at toe of butt. Action is crisp, bore shows overall moderate erosion and very good rifling. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (Antique)
