Lot 617 Lot of Three (3) Sawback Bayonets
Lot of Three (3) Sawback Bayonets: 1) German pioneer bayonet for the Model 1871 rifle, 18.5" narrow blade, marked at ricasso "Gebr. Sims, Suhl", German proof marks on back spine are "(crown)/A", "(crown)/R", "J", and "84" date. Brass handle with push-button catch, steel cross guard with unit markings "107.R.5.27." Condition is good, the blade shows age graying, minor rust and stains, and some pitting near the tip. Tear of the grip has a small dent near the bottom. Cross guard has light rust. Partial leather scabbard is missing the tip, with a brass throat and frog stud. Fits tight on the blade and only goes part way in. 2.) Rare German M1898/02 Pioneer bayonet, the hardest to find German sawback bayonet. 16.9" long, 1-3/8" wide, marked with "(crown)/Erfurt" at ricasso, "(crown)/W" proof on back spine, with Erfurt proof mark, and 03 date. Grooved wood grips, Erfurt proofs on top of pommel, push-button lock. Condition is good, the blade showing age graying, rust stains, sharpening to the edge, and minor edge nicks. Grips show light wear, minor scratches and depressions, with a small chip near one of the grip rivet screws. Push-button catch works well. No scabbard. 3.) Belgium M1868 Engineers bayonet, 18.75" long sawback blade, dated 1869 at the ricasso, Belgian proof marks on both sides of the ricasso, cross guard marked "V 1002". Grooved brass handle with push-button catch. Condition is good, the blade mostly cleaned bright, with light rust freckling on the right side. Clear markings. Brass handle shows nicks, scratches, and small gouges. Push button works properly. No scabbard. Est.: $300-$500/Lot.
