Antique Swiss Model 1842/67 Infantry Rifle, with Milbank-Amsler Metallic Cartridge Breechloading Alteration, #706, 18mm RF cal., 40.5" round barrel with blade front sight and unusual stirrup-type elevation-adjustable rear, marked "706" with what appears to be the "rampant bear" mark of Canton Appenzell at rear sight and a sunken oval "(cross)/V" acceptance mark at breech; large square-front lockplate (originally flintlock) is marked "(crown)/BF" (Beuret Freres of Liege, the original maker), has large military-style hammer; front-hinged "trapdoor" style breechblock has right-side release knob, is marked "Geb. Sulzer" and 3 "(cross)/V" marks outside, "S 706" inside; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling swivel and 2 finger-grooves, wide buttplate, serpentine sideplate, 3 spring-retained bands (top of the double-strap type, middle with sling swivel), trumpet-tip ramrod marked "2/265" (all having the "(crown)/BF" maker's mark). Fullstock of oil-finished walnut is marked "706" at sideplate, "1150" and large "E.G." within oval at left, "(star)/(crown)/Beuret/1/0" on belly. Condition is fine having overall bright finish with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with small wood losses at middle band, occasional minor marks, added varnish. Action is strong and crisp, clean bore shows light frosting and fine rifling. This breechloading mechanism was designed and patented by American Isaac Milbank, modified by Rudolf Amsler, and adopted by the Swiss Army in 1863. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
