Antique Peabody Breechloading Metallic Cartridge Military Rifle, NVSN, .45 Peabody RF cal., 33" round barrel with standard military sights (front doubles as bayonet lug) has "(crown)/V" proof mark at breech; receiver has same mark and "S" at breech, "Peabody's Pat/July 22, 1862/Man'f'd. by/Providence Tool Co./Prov., R.I." at left, serpentine trigger guard/operating lever; back-action lock with military hammer marked "E". Forestock of oil-finished walnut has 3 spring-retained bands (bottom with sling swivel), nosecap, slotted/grooved ramrod, matching buttstock a curved buttplate and swivel at belly, what appears to be a small inspector cartouche (indistinct) at left wrist. Mfg'd ca. 1866-71. Condition is very good retaining much darkened barrel blue, silvered case colors, else smooth gray gunmetal with sharp edges and markings. Stocks are sound and smooth showing generally light age and use marks (esp. buttstock), added varnish. Action is crisp, bore shows moderate etching, very good rifling. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
