Lot 25 U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Single-Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket
U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Single-Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket, NVSN, .58 cal., 40" round barrel marked "V/P/(eagle head)" and "1858" at semi-octagonal breech, with standard sights (front doubles as bayonet lug), cleanout screw-on nipple bolster; beveled lockplate has integral Maynard tape primer mechanism marked "(large eagle)" on right-hinged door, "U.S./Springfield" ahead of hammer, "1858" behind. Steel trigger guard with sling swivel, buttplate marked "US", 3 bands (middle with swivel), brass nosecap retains the tulip-tip ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1858. Condition is fine showing smooth, dulling bright gunmetal (bit of light erosion at nipple) with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth showing nice grain, color and finish, lacks inspector's cartouche at left. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows frosting and fine rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
