Scarce Whitney-Laidley Rolling Block Single-Shot 3-Band Infantry Rifle, Style I, NVSN, .45 CF cal., 35" round barrel with block-blade front sight (also bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear, marked "Whitney Arms Co.?Whitneyville, Conn."; large receiver has 4-piece breech mechanism, 3 small peen marks at left. Two-pc. stocks of oil-finished walnut have illegible word stamped at right butt, numerous X's scratched at left, 3 small peen marks lower forestock matching those on frame. Mfg'd ca. 1871-81. Condition is good being generally smooth gray gunmetal with scattered oxidation and light pitting, good edges and markings. Stocks show wear and extensive dings from age and military use, 1.5" chip at left breech area, chipping and losses along ramrod channel, yet are sound. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows overall light etching and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
