Civil War Maynard Breechloading Percussion Carbine, 2nd Type, #14258, .50 cal., 20" round barrel marked "S" at left octagonal breech; standing-breech receiver with central hammer has left sling-ring, serpentine trigger guard/operating lever, Maynard markings and 1851/1859 patent dates at left, 3-line "Mass. Arms Co." marking at right. Oil-finished walnut buttstock has "A.J.N." (?) and "J.M." (?) inspectors' cartouches at left wrist. Mfg'd 1863-65. Condition is very good retaining approx. 75% thinning barrel blue, silvered/darkened case colors, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with light marks, partly legible cartouches. Action is crisp, barrel hinge secure, bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
