Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine, #414480, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 22" barrel with standard sights and markings; receiver has serial number at rear, "low-arch" breechblock marked "U.S./Model/1884" at hinge, flat lockplate with standard markings. Oil-stained walnut halfstock has 2-pc. trigger guard without sling swivel, grooved trigger, curved buttplate with hinged door opening to 3-pc. cleaning rod (present), sling ring/bar at left, single band. Mfg'd ca. 1886-89. Condition is good, the barrel showing blue-brown patina with scattered discoloration, else generally smooth gray gunmetal (buttplate with much thinning blue), fine edges and markings. Stock shows expected light marks of military use, shallow chipping at toe, two 3" cracks in front of guard, is sound (lacks inspector's cartouche). Buffington rear sight is from a rifle (marked "R"), otherwise features are correct. Action is crisp, bore shows overall moderate etching, very good rifling. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
