Hall-North Model 1840 Breechloading Single-Shot Percussion Carbine, Type II, NVSN, .52 cal., 21" round barrel, with standard sights; 9.5" receiver is marked "FB" at left breech, 6" rear-hinged breechblock with boxlock hammer is marked "U.S./S. North/Midltn/Conn./1840" at front, has "fishtail" under-lever that opens breech for loading; steel fittings comprise 2 spring-retained bands, button-tip ramrod, trigger guard with sling ring at long rear tang, straight buttplate. Oil-finished walnut stock with inspector's cartouche at left apron. Mfg'd ca. 1840-43. Condition is good retaining no original finishes, being gray/brown gunmetal cleaned of scattered light-moderate pitting. Fine edges and markings. Stock is sound showing light marks, shallow losses at front of trigger plate, what may be original "feathering", illegible but visible inspector's cartouche. Action is crisp, breech hinge secure, smoothbore shows light etching. Brass hang tag reads "F.W. Roebling III/Collection/Trenton, N.J./152." Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
