Civil War Whitney U.S. Navy Model 1861 Percussion "Plymouth" Rifle, #2990, .75 cal., 34.25" round barrel has blade front, long-range rear sight graduated to 1,000 yds., 3.6" bayonet lug at right muzzle, "2990" at tang; beveled lockplate has large "(spread-wing eagle/flag)" and "U.S./Whitneyville" below bolster, "1863" vertically at rear; iron fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with finger-spur, curved buttplate marked "US" at top, 2 bands (lower with swivel, upper of the double-strap type retaining the barrel-tip ramrod). Stock of oil-finished black walnut has swivel at belly. Mfg'd 1863. Condition is good, the barrel deep brown showing general oxidation (pitting at breech obscuring markings there), else gray/brown gunmetal with good edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth showing oval "FCW" cartouche of inspector Frank C. Warner (light but present) opposite lock, scattered marks, chipping in ramrod channel.
