Post-Civil War Sharps New Model Cartridge Altered Breechloading Carbine, #C,969, .50-70 RF cal., 22" tapered round barrel has standard sights (rear with 3-line Lawrence marking); "straight breech" receiver has auto-extraction, left-side sling ring/bar; back-action lock has integral pellet primer device, usual Sharps/Lawrence markings. Walnut forend has single band, matching buttstock "E.F." (E. Ferrar or Edward Flather) and "D.F.C." (David F. Clark) inspectors' cartouches, semi-crescent buttplate marked "R". Mfg'd early 1860s, altered and refinished 1867 at the Sharps factory. Condition is good retaining traces of blue and case colors, else gray gunmetal with good edges and markings (barrel markings removed by factory refinishing). Stocks are sound with faint cartouches, generally minor marks, added finish. Action is crisp, orig. 6-groove bore shows scattered oxidation, sharp rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,200. (Antique)
