Frontier-Era Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy" Lever Action Rifle, 3rd Type, #38615 B, .44 RF cal., 24" octagonal barrel marked "Winchester's Repeating Arms, New Haven, CT/King's Improvement Patented March 29, 1866, October 16, 1860", has buckhorn sights, full-length tubular magazine beneath; distinctive brass receiver has removable sideplates, brass cartridge lifter, is stamped "(star) J. Cowan (star)" at top. Oil-finished walnut forend retained by a brass nosecap, matching buttstock has brass crescent buttplate with trapdoor for rods (not present), sling swivel at belly. Mfg'd ca. 1870. Condition is good retaining perhaps 15%-20% original blue with added finish; sharp edges and markings; cleaned brass shows light toning. Forend shows a full-length left hairline reinforced by 3 tiny staples; buttstock is sound and smooth showing minimal marks, both have pleasing color, added finish.
