MEXICO, Córdoba, 4 reales-sized proclamation medal, Charles III, 1760, struck variety, very rare, NGC XF 40. Grove-K17; Medina-61; Herrera-55; Betts-453. Obverse with young bust of Charles III within legend CAROL.III.ANTQ. ET NOV HISPA.REX with date between florets below; reverse with crowned arms inside legend (beginning at 7 o'clock) INSIGN FIDELIT ET PVBLIC LAETITIA • VILLAE DECORDU. Richly toned over luster, with a few small marks in fields and minor rim-flaws on reverse. This newly discovered example (struck, not cast) represents one of the rarest Betts medals from the reign of Charles III, and the only one attributed to the city of Córdoba in the state of Veracruz. To date, only two other struck examples are known to exist in private collections, one of which is the Porraz specimen illustrated in Grove. Notably, Medina had to use a hand-engraved depiction borrowed from Herrera of the example permanently impounded in the Museo Arqueológico in Madrid, which indicates he had never seen an original.
