SURINAME, Dutch Guiana, copper uniface 4 duits, 1679, NGC AU 50 BN, finest known in NGC census. KM-8; Sch-1434c. Nice light copper color with traces of original luster, crude and simple design with parrot on four-leaved branch with denomination 4 at upper right and date in exergue, high grade for the issue, in fact the finest in the NGC census by three grades. As pointed out in Schjolten, each of these coins were originally supposed to be the equivalent of four pounds of sugar, which was used as currency in the absence of coins.
