URUGUAY, Montevideo, 1 peso fuerte, 1844, medal alignment, rare, NGC MS 62. KM-5. Choice luster with speckled gray toning, nice strike and full rims, just a few light marks on reverse, a high-grade example of the rare "Peso del Sitio" or "Montevideo Siege Peso" struck in low mintage (only 1500 pieces) in February 1844 during the nearly eight-year Siege of Montevideo (described by the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas as a "new Troy") by Manuel Oribe, who, in alliance with General Rosas of Argentina, had formed his own government outside the city during the Uruguayan Civil War, the siege finally ending upon the defeat of Oribe by Brazilian troops in 1851.
