Lot 154 Buffalo Brewing Co. "New Brew" Gypsy Calendar Broadside
Fabulous, early piece! "1902 Greeting./ Buffalo Brewing Co./ Sacramento, Cal./ New Brew" Centered is an oval portrait of a voluptuous brunette gypsy wearing a shawl. A golden border surrounds her. Miniature calendar months are scattered across the top and bottom. Gold lettering with a blue background. "From Photo. Copyright by Schloss, 1900." Framed and matted. Broadside measures 17" x 22" in a 24 1/2" x 30" frame. Jacob Schloss (1856-1938) was a New York photographer who specialized in female portraits, especially of performers. He became known in the 1890s as being a photographer of beautiful women. He was an early pioneer in copyrighting his images for use in magazines and periodicals; he sued anyone who tried to use his photographs without permission. He utilized diffused and shadowed natural lighting, but later preferred electric light illumination. The identity of the performer Schloss photographed for this broadside is a mystery.
