Lot 194 Early Sacramento Brewery Lager Beer Tin Sign
c.1890s. Very rare early piece! Silver background and black lettering. "Sacramento" and "Lager Beer" are raised letters. Floral borders (hops and barley). Established 1853. Measures 13.75" x 5." Excellent condition for its age: chips to paint and small areas of rust. What 19th-century business hung this sign to convince thirsty workers to go for a lager? The Sacramento Brewery was founded in 1853 by Philip Scheld, a man with experience in retail and liquor. Philip wanted to return to Europe, and needed a partner he could trust. He found that partner with John Ochswald. Scheld was also the director of the Sacramento Savings Bank. Burt Collection
